Hagia Sophia, by Arild Vågen |
Hagia Sophia is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Istanbul\Turkey,
its unique architecture that represented by its massive dome in the middle and
the four minarets in the corners make it architectural masterpiece.
The way, which the dome of Hagia Sophia was built in, is amazing, and makes
it hard to believe that someone could imagine and performed it! One of the most
beautiful things that you see when enter Hagia Sophia is the light that
reflects everywhere in the interior of the nave, giving the dome the appearance
of hovering above this, the view is wonderful and results some great photos for
those who interests in building photography. However, this effect was achieved
by inserting forty windows around the base of the original structure.
The
interior decorations of Hagia Sophia show another type of ingenuity and artistic sense; it consisted
of abstract designs on marble slabs on the walls and floors, as well as mosaics
on the curving vaults.
The area where Hagia Sophia is
located is called the area of the Blue Mosque. In this historic area, you will
see and photograph wooden Turkish houses, mansions of Ottoman Aristocracy,
Baths of Haseki Sultan and more!
The history of Hagia Sophia backs
to 537 until 1453, where it served as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral and seat of
the Patriarchate of Constantinople until 1453, except between 1204 and 1261,
when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The
building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931. It was then secularized and
opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.
