What To See And Do In Socotra?




Socotra (The Island of the Dragon's Blood Tree) is an amazing and unique island in the Indian Ocean South of Yemen. This rare island contains many rare plants, trees, insects, reptiles, birds and animals; many of the creatures in the island of Socotra cannot be found anywhere on earth except Socotra!
The island has become an interesting destination for its calm beaches, amazing landscapes, unique lifestyle, and the rare plants and animals.
Beaches of Socotra are amazing, they are calm and clear, and you can relax in its soft sand or swim in the warm water. The most famous beaches that are perfect for swimming and diving are Detwah, De Hamry and Ras Shuab.

A beach
Socotra is not just one island; it is an archipelago of four islands, Samha, Darsa, Abd Al Kory and the biggest one Socotra. Socotra is the main island and the capital of the archipelago, which became an independent province in 2014.
Most attractions are on the Island of Socotra, a four wheel drive car is the popular vehicle for getting around. Hiking is also an option for adventure lovers, but rarely and hard.
Travel and tourism companies provide trips ranging from three days to ten days or more if a client request. The ideal time to be spent on the island is between four days to a week. Trips are ranging from camping in natural reserves, swimming and fishing, hiking and discovering.

Things to do:
Swimming:
Beaches of Socotra are amazing, they are calm and clear, and you can relax in its soft sand or swim in the warm water. The most famous beaches that are perfect for swimming and diving are Detwah, De Hamry and Ras Shuab.
Hiking:
There are too many valleys, hills and mountains, forests and caves spread over the island of Socotra, which all provide a wonderful environment for hiking.
The highlands of Dexam are the most famous mountains on the island, it is just a few kilometers away from Hadibu; it is famous for its forests of the Dragon's Blood Tree which is the most famous tree on the island.
Things to see:
Plants
825 species of thriving plants; 37% of these plants are settled and has no instance in the world.
Birds
221 types of birds, which are important globally.
Replies
30 types of reptiles in Socotra; 27 of them cannot be found anywhere except Socotra.
Arthropods and molluscs
50 known types of arthropods and molluscs and 5 habitation types of Thericleidae. There are also three types of marine cancers, in addition to a very big spider (human Palm-size) known as the monocentropus balfouri.
Mammals
14 types of mammals in the island of Socotra such as camels, cattle, zebras, wild cats, goats, sheep and civet cat which known as “Al-zepad”.Read a detailed article about Socotra from this link.

Socotra Island Part1 The Land Of Rare Plants

Discovering new worlds is nice, but discovering rare and strange places is great! if you looking to have this feeling -just like me- then you should travel to Socotra island - Yemen, it is one of the few rare and strange places in the world, where you can find things only in Socotra - like the plant in the photo to the left-  not any other place in the world! This plant grows in rocks , it has a strange shape , the islanders use its leaves   as  treatment for some  diseases. هل يجب أن تكون محايداً دائماً؟

 غالباً، إن لم يكن دائماً، ما يُطلب من الاعلام والصحفيين الالتزام بمبدأ الحياد، أي عدم الميل إلى أي طرف من اطراف الخصومة. حسناً، لنكن صريحين بهذا الشأن، إن الحياد مهم جداً لتحقيق المصداقية، لكنه ليس مبدأ أساسي يجب التمسك به دائماً وأبداً؛ فالصحافة مهمتها إظهار الحقيقة، وانصاف المظلوم، وإيصال صوت من لا صوت له. تمثل الصراعات اليوم مادة أساسية لعمل الصحافة، قد يكون من السهل الوقوف على الحياد عندما لا تكون طرفاً في الصراع، أو عندما لا تكون جزءً أو تابعاً، بأي شكل من الأشكال ، لأحد أطراف الصراع. أما عندما يكون العكس فإن الحياد يصبح مستحيلا، ومع ذلك فهذه ليست القصة الكاملة! المصيبة الأكبر هي عندما تكون الطرف المظلوم، المضطهد، أو المغلوب على أمره.   إن الحياد في حالات الظلم هو انحياز لجانب الظالم، كما يقول ديزموند توتو، الحائز على جائزة نوبل للسلام؛ ذلك لأن الحياد يساعد الظالم وليس الضحية. السكوت عن المظالم عار يورث البغضاء؛ لذلك تأتي الصحافة لتقف إلى جانب أولئك الذين لا يمتلكون السلطة أو لا يستطيعون نزع حقوقهم. لكن الانحياز والانصاف لا يعني بأي شكل من الأشكال التدليس، أو التضلي...
